Meet our Team

Alan Edmonds – Trainer

Alan EdmondsAlan started his insurance career with General Accident as a non-marine casualty underwriter before joining JH Minet  and then Marsh as Learning and Talent Development Consultant.  He has also worked at QBE, Jelf  and JLT in training and development roles.

Alan delivers a variety of technical Insurance subjects as well as CII revision & examination techniques, Management and Leadership skills and Business skills.

Alan Hornby – Trainer

Alan Hornby 2Alan has 30 years experience working for independent insurance brokers in various roles, including account handler, account executive and insurance manager.  He has been involved in GI compliance since 2005, becoming Group Compliance Manager in 2008.

Alan delivers training in all types of regulatory compliance and all classes of commercial insurance, as well as CII exam revision.

Alison Lawson – Trainer

Alison Lawson 2Alison worked for Aviva and its legacy companies for 20 years, in various Technical Underwriting & Claims Roles, followed by various industry roles including Senior Commercial Undrewriting Consultant, Business Learning Consultant Technical and Customer Relations Manager.

Alison delivers training in all technical insurance subjects.  She is also an NLP Master Practitioner and delivers business and personal development skills.

Angela Hagenow – Trainer

Angela HagenowAngela is a human resource professional with twenty-five years of experience in all aspects of employment.  She has experience of training across a wide range of industry sectors, including working for a range of insurance companies and brokers.

Angela delivers the full range of business and personal development skills, as well as management, supervision and leadership skills.

Angie Bryant – Compliance and Regulatory Consultant

Angie BryantAngie’s career began her career in a small life assurance company in the City where she became the Pensions Administration Manager.  She has also worked as financial adviser, IFA paraplanner, T&C supervisor and compliance manager. For 6 years she was the Compliance Director for a large regional IFA and investment management firm.

Angie’s real business experience as a director gives her practical commercial knowledge enabling her to turn regulation into commercial reality in a pragmatic way that recognises any firm’s need for profitability.

Anna Jaye – Trainer

Anna JayeAnna has over 20 years experience in Commercial Insurance Underwriting working with RSA.  She is a technical expert in Property and Combined business, both open market and schemes based.  During her career she has always combined her strong technical skills with her interest in people development and has a real enthusiasm for training.

Anna delivers a variety of Technical training workshops with an emphasis on Commercial Property/Business Interruption and Liability.

Beverley Lyn – Trainer

Beverley lynBeverley has over 25 years’ experience in the UK General Insurance Industry. Beverley has always incorporated her passion for training  into her career and has played a key role in change management projects  utilising her skills as a facilitator .

Beverley combines her strong technical knowledge with a passion for developing people to deliver learner centred, interactive, practical workshops in technical insurance and business skills.

Bill Atkinson – Trainer

Bill AtkinsonBill honed his skills during 28 years with Royal, including marketing, corporate hospitality,  underwriting services and branch management before moving into broking, with Frizzell and Marsh.   He later returned to the company market for spells with NFU Mutual, Avon, and NIG/RBS.

Bill specialises in Sales and Relationship training, and training for Senior Managers and is the lead trainer for our Senior Management Development programme.

Brian Brookes – Trainer

Brian BrookesBrian began his insurance career at Commercial Union and London & Edinburgh.  He then worked for an insurance broker (where he was responsible for  responsible for dealing with international marine losses and large fire claims) and later for Argos plc as Claims Manager.  This was followed by some time working as a loss adjuster for a major firm, before taking up his current position as Claims and Insurance Manager for a large city council.

Brian’s training speciality is claims, including personal injury claims.

Catherine Storer – Trainer

Catherine StorerCatherine was Training Manager for NIG Skandia and then ran the Training and HR function at loss adjusters McLarens Toplis for 4 years, before becoming an associate for Searchlight.  Catherine has worked with many multi-national clients in the public and private sector, and has worked at all levels and across a variety of business functions such as sales, marketing, human resources, customer service and finance.

Catherine specialises in management and leadership training, and business skills.

Cathy Butcher – Trainer

Cathy ButcherCathy has held Learning and Development posts in a variety of large organisations.   In particular she worked with many organisations, supporting the transition into FSA regulation and, most recently, she was Learning and Development Manager for Zurich Insurance, where she was involved in establishing management development programmes and a competency assessment process.

Cathy delivers management and business skills training, as well as training and competency consultancy/training.

Chris Abram – Trainer

chris-abramChris is an insurance and financial services professional with over 35 years experience in the industry, covering sales, underwriting and training.

Chris delivers a wide range of technical insurance workshops and exam revision training, as well as a wide range of business and sales skills.

Chris Parslow – Trainer

Chris ParslowChris has over 25 years experience as a Management Training and Development specialist.  He began his training career with British Aerospace before moving to J. Sainsbury’s head office in 1987.

Chris became a consultant in 1994 and has worked with a wide variety of insurance clients delivering management and leadership training.

Christine Kelly – Trainer

Christine KellyChris has over 30 years Financial Services experience in  a variety of roles – providing independent financial advice to personal clients, team management and more recently in learning and development.   With a track record in developing managers, sales advisers and customer service staff, she has utilised her practical experience to achieve considerable success with businesses in delivering measurable improvement in results.

Darren Slater

Darren is a highly qualified learning and development consultant, who brings a range of experience as a Project Manager, Coach, Trainer and Facilitator, gained through extensive active involvement in a range of organisations within the Financial Services Sector, including NatWest, Aviva and RBS.

He delivers a full range of CII Financial Services examination topics, as well as management , coaching and project management skills.

Dave Hancock – Trainer

Dave HancockDave has over 30 years’ experience in the UK General Insurance industry gained across a wide range of disciplines including underwriting, risk management,  business development and general management

Dave joined Searchlight in 1999 as its first Associate and has contributed to the development of the range of products Searchlight offers customers both face to face and via distance learning as well as its reputation as a provider of quality training and consultancy services.

Dave Hole – Trainer

Dave HoleDave has worked in the insurance industry for around 30 years holding various technical claims and underwriting roles.  He is currently claims manager for Plum Underwriting, a Lloyd’s based underwriting agency who specialise in the insurance of non-standard home insurance risks.

Dave been a trainer for Searchlight since 2002, developing/delivering both technical and soft skills workshops.

David Barrett – Trainer

David BarrettDavid started his career in 1973 at Reed Stenhouse as a trainee broker and over the next ten years rose to the position of unit Manager.  In 1984 David joined Anchor Insurance Brokers as Branch Manager and became the Commercial Insurance Director responsible for all commercial insurance.

David then moved to become Senior partner in ABM Insurance Services for 16 years before becoming a training consultant in 2004.

David Worsfold – Trainer

David WorsfoldDavid  is best known for his work as a financial journalist, in particular as a writer on the insurance industry which he has covered for over 30 years.  As Group Editorial Services Director at Incisive Media from 2005 to 2103 David had responsibility for a wide range of editorial and production functions, including the company’s successful graduate recruitment and training programme. His role included managing editorial and production teams in London and overseas, as well Incisive’s two TV studios in London.

He has developed a wide range of highly effective training courses that not only build knowledge and skills but inspire the participants to use them.

Diane Jenkins – Trainer

Diane JenkinsDiane started her insurance career in 1980 as a graduate trainee underwriter. She moved into broking in 1984 and joined Aon in 1987. During her time at Aon she worked as a client director, placing broker, technical trainer, regional manager, and more recently as a technical specialist providing insurance and risk management advice and training to firms involved in mergers and acquisitions.

She is a business interruption specialist and was part of the research study group that wrote the 2012 IIL/CILA publication – Business Interruption Policy Wordings – Challenges  highlighted by claims experience.

Diane Jerrum – Training Manager

SearchlightDiane has been with Searchlight for 10 years and she is responsible for the administration of all in-house face to face training.

Diane has a background in psychology and prior to joining Searchlight she worked in market research, youth training and  special needs education.

Diane Steer – Trainer

Diane SteerDiane was Associate Director and Training Officer at Bluefin from 1997 to 2011.  Prior to that she was a Regional Director at Oughtred & Harrison.

Diane specialises in motor and farming insurance and she delivers training in many classes of personal and commercial insurance, as well as exam revision training for many of the CII Certificate and Diploma modules.

Fiona Robson – Trainer

Fiona RobsonFiona joined NFU as a trainee working in both the policy servicing and new business departments of their Life Assurance division.  Later she moved into training and development, where she worked with staff from across all parts of the organisation including general insurance and the shared services departments, developing new supervisors and managers within the organisation and in introducing the training for interviewing and appraising staff based on organisational competencies.

George Miller – Trainer

George MillerGeorge enjoyed a successful management career before becoming a training and development consultant in 1999.   His wide-ranging management career in a blue chip multi-national company included a diverse range of roles and responsibilities.

Since becoming a trainer George has focused on passing on his experience and skills to others through a comprehensive management skills portfolio.

Glenn Sexton – Trainer

Glenn SextonGlenn is a highly experienced insurance underwriter having worked at Exports Credit Guarantees Department (ECGD), GEC and AIG. Currently, he is a Senior Underwriter and Training & Compliance Manager at Equinox Global Limited.

Glenn is an expert on trade credit was a convenor and editor of the on-line training programme for Trade Credit Insurance on behalf of the ABI and accredited by the Institute of Credit Management. He has had several articles published on trade credit and associated legal matters.

Glyn Brooks – Trainer and IT Consultant

Glyn BrooksGlyn has over twenty years experience of working in the computer industry, providing technical support, consultancy and training to all types of companies and organisations small, medium and large.

Glyn delivers training in a very wide range of IT products.  He also acts as a consultant for Searchlight, including developing and constantly updating our databases.

Graham Williams – Trainer

Grahame WilliamsGraham has over 30 years’ experience in the UK general insurance market, working principally in the claims discipline, but has also been active in the legal arena.  He started his insurance career with Minster Insurance Company, progressing through to claims management level,  ultimately becoming Technical Claims Manager at Groupama, and then Legal Projects Manager.  He joined Prospect Claims Management, assisting in the rapid expansion of the company.

In 2004 Graham became a training consultant.  He has authored textbooks for the CII for many years, and has also been an examiner.

Gwyn Williams – Trainer

Gwyn WilliamsGwyn has over 35 years experience in the UK general insurance industry, gained principally in a commercial insurance broking environment.  Following the initial Royal Insurance  training programme, Gwyn specialised in General Insurance claims, with a particular emphasis on Liability insurance claims.   He then moved into the general insurance broking market, first as Account Executive and then as Associate Director of a provincial insurance broker.

Gwyn delivers a wide range of technical insurance training.

Helen Broad – Trainer

Helen Broad 0Helen is an Aviation Insurance Consultant with over 20 years experience in both underwriting and broking, with companies such as Aon, Goldfield Underwriting and IGI Insurance Company, working with high-profile global organisations in London and international markets.

Ian Ashleigh – Trainer and Consultant

Ian began his career with a major Building Society before training as a financial adviser and then joining the compliance team of a national IFA. Following a stint at the Regulator, Ian led the Training & Development team for an Employee Benefits Consultancy.

Ian has been running his own consultancy since 2004 advising a number of large and small Financial Services organisations regarding regulatory change, conduct of business and training & competence requirements

Ian Bruce – Trainer

Ian BruceAn experienced salesman, sales manager, trainer, training manager, management developer and coach with experience at senior manager level, Ian began his working life at NatWest and held senior management posts at Coutts & Co.

Ian is noted for his infectious energy and enthusiasm. He delivers fun and interactive training sessions and possesses a keen sense of humour, and is able to share his experiences from the workplace, which delegates feel demonstrates the value of any tools and techniques included within our training programmes.

Ian Jerrum – Managing Director

SearchlightIan began his insurance career as a graduate trainee at Eagle Star becoming Product Development Manager in the 1980s.  He then set up CNA Insurance, successfully managing the business until 1998 when he entered the world of premium finance, first as Managing Director of TIFCO and then CEO at Singer & Friedlander. Ian is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and was admitted to the Livery of the Worshipful Company of Insurers in 2003.

Having always espoused the benefits of staff professionalism, motivation and training, as a differentiator in the world of financial services, Ian joined Searchlight in 2004.

Ian Marshall – Trainer and Consultant

Ian MarshallIan is a Chartered Accountant and has specialised in insurance for over 30 years. During this time he has worked as an  auditor, director, consultant and expert in various fields and in many countries. Ian’s employment during this period has been with Ernst & Young and the consulting firm, Chiltington International.

Ian’s experience is primarily in reinsurance, the London Market, arbitrations, schemes of arrangement and business transfers.

Jock Gillies – Trainer and Consultant

Jock GilliesJock was a police officer for over 23 years and his last 6 years  of service were spent in the Commercial Fraud Squad investigating corporate frauds and in the Serious Crime Group as a Financial Investigator.  After leaving the police in 2004 he was instrumental in coordinating Bristol financial Institutions and enforcement agencies in the implementation of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and the Fraud Act 2006.

Jock has also held the position of Insurance Mediation Compliance Manager and Financial Services Money Laundering Reporting Officer. He has been a trainer for over 35 years.

John Carter – Trainer and Consultant

John CarterJohn has more than 25 years of business knowledge and experience, most notably working for two blue-chip companies: the world’s largest Insurance Broker (Marsh) and a FTSE100 Outsource provider (Capita).  At Marsh became Head of Operational Support  in 2000 and six years later became Head of Learning and Communication, covering a 600-strong workforce.  He also performed this role as the work transitioned to Capita.

John delivers a wide range of busines and management skills.

John Constable – Trainer and Consultant

John ConstableJohn’s diverse training career spanning 20 years began in the RAF. Since 1991 John has been in insurance firstly with Zurich and then JLT Risk Solutions, where he was Head of People Development.

John has trained and coached in many business subjects, bringing commercial awareness, credibility and pure energy. He now runs regulatory, risk and financial training for brokers and insurers and authors on-line learning. His assignments include open programmes, in-company bespoke training, board briefings and executive coaching.

Jonathan Besso-Cowan – Trainer and Consultant

Jonathan Besso-CowanAfter reinsurance broking in the London insurance market, Jonathan began training activities related to insurance, regulation and management in 1986.  He has trained in London and other parts of the UK, in Italy, Poland, Russia and Colombia.

Jonathan has trained for many years at Lloyd’s training centre and elsewhere in the London Market, working with participants at all levels from graduate trainees to board directors and tutored at Cass Business School on an insurance-linked MBA.

Judy West – Trainer

 Judy WestJudy has worked as Regional Underwriting Manager- Property Classes, for a large UK general insurance company.  She also spent many years as a Risk Surveyor, as well as managing the Risk Survey team.

Judy delivers training across all insurance classes, including Property, Casualty, Motor and Personal Lines.

Ken Langfield – Trainer

Ken LangfieldWith over 25 years in learning and development, Ken has worked with staff from front line to Board level in both the public and financial sectors (banks, building societies, insurance companies and brokers). Ken has had articles published in trade journals, and has written two successful entries for the prestigious National Training Awards.

Ken delivers a wide range of business and management skills.  His training style is characterised by insight, credibility and experience, and his workshops are known for a high level of interaction and humour.

Kevin Green – Trainer

Kevin GreenKevin has over 20 years’ experience of working within the insurance industry, from claims negotiation through to the sales and servicing of general insurance products.  Developing a specific interest for people development, Kevin made a move into training and development , initially as a sales trainer and progressing to hold national and group training management roles with Churchill and Royal Bank of Scotland Insurance.

Kevin now specialises in helping individuals , teams and organisations to sell more  products and services, build strong relationships with existing customers and service them better.

Len Wilkins – Trainer

Len WilkinsLen is a Chartered Insurance Practitioner known and respected throughout the London training market with over 35 years experience with Lloyd’s underwriting agencies, Lloyd’s brokers and the CII.   A former regulator with the General Insurance Services Council with special responsibility for their accreditation scheme for Competence and Training, Len is a recognised expert on aviation insurance, marine insurance and reinsurance.

Len is an accomplished and experienced professional technical insurance trainer.

Michael Rimmer – Trainer

Michael RimmerMichael started his marine insurance career with the Eagle Star Group in 1971 and has been in the industry ever since. He moved to Durban in 1986 to take up a position with the South African Eagle Insurance Company and later became National Marine Manager for the St Paul Insurance Company in Johannesburg.  He was twice chairman of the Durban Marine Insurance Association and a committee member of the Association of Marine Underwriters in South Africa with responsibility for marine education and training.

He returned to the UK in 2003 and is currently a Marine Client Manager for Aon UK, handling freight, logistics and other specialist marine liability business.

Neil Park – Trainer

Neil ParkNeil draws on his seventeen years of experience managing major client relationships and leading broking teams in the London and North American insurance markets.  Whilst in North America, he advised a Big 4 accountancy firm on the financing and management of their Professional Indemnity risk.

In the London market he acted as a broker, account executive and account director for Willis Limited and specialised in advising U.K. multinational firms on their risk financing and risk management requirements.  He advised clients in a range of industries including  telecommunications, retail, professional and financial services.

Nick Smith – Trainer and Consultant

Nick SmithFollowing a career in the Army Nick worked for a life assurance company as a financial planner. In 1990 he joined LAUTRO as one of its original team of Training and Competence specialists carrying out Periodic Inspection Visits. After six years as a regulator, including one year as the Training Manager for the PIA, Nick became a full time consultant and trainer.

Nick’s specialist regulatory knowledge has been applied to a wide range of training and development projects, working with advisers, sales managers and compliance staff.

Nik Joshi – Trainer

Nik JoshiNik has over 30 years of experience with the UK Government, the Petrochemical Industry and the Insurance industry as an economist, marketing director and management consultant.

After working as an economist with the Government Service, Nik joined the petrochemical industry as Marketing Manager/Marketing Director before leaving to become a Management Consultant in 1991.   He has undertaken projects in the financial services industries in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa, working for private firms, regulatory authorities and governments

Norman Cochrane – Trainer and Consultant

Norman CochraneNorman’s career has spanned working as an independent financial adviser, a manager and a director of companies, a supervisor and compliance officer,  and as a trainer, course writer and presenter.

Norman delivers training in all technical areas of financial services, including all levels of financial services exams, as well as core regulatory issues and general insurance.

Patrick Lynch – Trainer

Patrick LynchPaddy has spent all his working life in engineering insurance, working across the UK, including over 20 years at National Vulcan and 15 years at HSB Engineering Insurance Ltd, where he was Group Sales Manager.

Paddy specialises in all areas of engineering, including engineering inspection, COSHH and PSR regulations.

Phil Dockerill – Trainer and Consultant

Phil DockerillPhil’s initial experience was with London Market Insurance Brokers and a specialist Reinsurance Company which was followed by a number of years employed in a regulated environment responsible for advised sales, sales management, compliance, training and various projects.

In the last ten years has acted as a consultant in training and compliance issues for the financial services industry.

Richard Galley – Trainer and Consultant

Richard GalleyRichard worked for BUPA for over 20 years until 2011, the last 10 years as Head of Compliance and Policy Development.  Since then he has been a consultant in regulatory compliance and learning and development.

Richard specialises in training in all areas of regulation and compliance, and also has a particular interest in executive coaching/mentoring, cultural evolution, group facilitation and personal/team effectiveness.  He is an Insights Discovery Licensed Practitioner.

Robert Young – Trainer

Robert YoungRobert has over 30 years experience in the UK General Insurance Industry, working throughout this time in the underwriting area.  He started his career in the Personal Lines department of Eagle Star as a trainee underwriting clerk and progressing to become Manager of one of the two International Underwriting teams in Manchester.

Robert specialises in commercial property and business interruption training and, in the words of a number of delegates, he makes business interruption both “entertaining and easy to understand” – no mean achievement!

Roy Rodger – Trainer

Roy RodgerRoy worked for Royal & Sun Alliance for 35 years, with much of his time spent dealing with general insurance.    In 1985, he moved to HO where he was involved with the management of the Personal, Commercial, and Fleet motor accounts.   Subsequently Roy spent much of his time dealing with technical motor issues and training.

After leaving RSA in 1999, Roy worked at the ABI as Project Officer for the Motor Insurance Database, since when he has operated as a freelance Motor Insurance Consultant and Trainer.

Sarah Godfrey – Trainer

Sarah GodfreySarah began her insurance career with Royal Insurance, handling personal lines claims, prior to moving to deal with personal and commercial liability claims along with motor personal injury. She became a team leader of the Technical Department and then moved to the Best Practice, Audit and Training team.  Sarah then became Support Services Manager for RSA, managing a disparate team of process consultants, IT, accounts,Human Resources  and training. Following this, she became the Household Claims Manager of More Th>n, managing a call centre of over 90 people.

Sarah joined Searchlight in January 2004 and delivers a wide range of technical insurance and business skills training.

Sally Fellingham-Huggett – Open Market Manager

SearchlightSally joined Searchlight in 2007 and is responsible for Searchlight’s open market training.

Sally was previously employed by Friends Provident as Learning Centre Controller where she was responsible for researching and launching Learning Centres across Friends Providents’ various sites.

Steve Kelly – Trainer

Steve KellySteve has worked in the Financial Services Industry for over 30 years in a variety of roles, advising personal and corporate customers and managing administration and sales teams.   His passion for people development, nurtured in his management roles, saw him move into training consultancy (providing technical and skill based training/coaching) and relationship management roles with Legal and General.

Steve Mason – Trainer

Steve MasonSteve has over 35 years experience in the London Market, and has been involved in technical insurance training and as a tutor for insurance examinations for 25 of these. His career started with Willis, in International claims, before moving into training. He has also worked in senior learning and development roles within the Chartered Insurance Institute, the British Insurance Brokers Association and Marsh.

He specialises in face-to-face training and has developed a reputation for innovative and stimulating training delivery.

Steve Paterson – Trainer

Steve PatersonSteve worked for RSA for over 30 years and held a variety of leadership roles, including Commercial Underwriting  Manager, Property and Accident Account Manager.

Steve delivers training on all commercial insurances with a specialism  in  Property/Business Interruption and Liability.

Sue Noble – Trainer and Coach

Sue NobleSue has over 20 years experience of working within a large and complex organisation within the field of HR and Leadership Development.  She delivers management coaching and leadership skills programmes to both large and small organisations as well as providing  Executive and Business coaching to senior managers and leaders.

Sue’s aim and focus is on improving management behaviours and communication skills in order to build a motivated, high performing team for improved business success and customer service. She does this through a range of inspiring, engaging and fun management development workshops.

Trevor Smith – Trainer and Consultant

Trevor worked for over 40 years for Allianz, including underwriting, sales and team management. For the last 20 years he focused on learning and development , leading  the company approach to leadership and team development, talent development, technical development (underwriting, sales and Claims), professional  qualifications and eLearning design and implementation.

In addition to working as a trainer for Searchlight, Trevor carries out regular observations of all our trainers.
