This intensive two hour SearchBite will consider the Data Protection principles and the importance of information security within the General Insurance sector.

The Data Protection Act controls how personal information is used by organisations, businesses or the government.

Everyone who is responsible for using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’.

This session is suited to those who are less familiar with Data Protection and the requirements associated with it.

The 8 Principles of Data Protection:

•the role of the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office
•outline of each of the 8 Principles
•consideration of how each Principle applies in practice to the general insurance sector

Data Protection and Information Security in practice:

•taking steps to ensure compliance with the 8 Principles of Data Protection
•safeguarding personal data
•establishing effective information security measures
•sending personal data overseas
•‘Subject Access Requests’ and responding to the individual’s right to access personal information

By the end of this SearchBite, participants will be able to:

  • articulate the 8 Principles of Data Protection
  • apply the 8 Principles of Data Protection to their own business and determine the degree to which they are achieving compliance
  • understand the importance of information security
  • start formulating robust plans for establishing, or refreshing measures within own business intended to hold personal data securely
  • start to build a basis for reviewing business performance in relation to Data Protection requirements and building this into the regular risk assessment process
  • react positively and correctly to a ‘Subject Access Request’
